How much of your TNB bill can solar cut?

Your bill has five parts and solar only reduces some of them. Here is what each unit of solar is really worth, and five ways to save more.

Person reviewing household bills with a calculator

Since 1 July 2025, a home electricity bill in Peninsular Malaysia is made up of separate charges. Understanding them explains why two homes with the same solar system can see very different savings.

What you pay for each unit from the grid

Capacity4.55 sen/kWh4.55 sen/kWh
Network12.85 sen/kWh12.85 sen/kWh
Total per unit44.43 sen/kWh54.43 sen/kWh

On top of that there is a RM10 monthly retail charge, normally waived for homes using 600 kWh or less, and the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), which changes monthly with fuel prices.

Until 31 December 2026: homes using up to 800 kWh a month are exempt from the AFA, the retail charge and the 8% service tax. The government raised the threshold from 600 kWh for September to December 2026.

What a unit of solar is worth

A unit you use yourself is worth roughly 50% to 65% more than a unit you export. Export credits also expire at the end of each billing month, and they cannot be used to offset the AFA.

So how much can you cut?

It depends on how much power you use while the sun is up. A home that is occupied in the daytime, or runs air conditioning, water heaters or a home office during the day, uses more of its own solar and saves more. A home that is empty until evening exports more and saves less. This is why we size a system from your actual bills and daily routine instead of quoting a standard percentage.

Five ways to save more

  1. Shift flexible loads to daytime. Run the washing machine, dishwasher, water heater and pool pump between 10am and 4pm.
  2. Charge your EV in the day when you can.
  3. Size for your usage. A bigger system is not better if the extra credits expire unused.
  4. Consider a battery if most of your usage is at night.
  5. Keep panels clean and check your monitoring app so a fault does not go unnoticed for months.
